President's Message

Recently, I have debated what the theme of the President’s Message should be for this year. In an effort to make these messages as beneficial and worth your time as possible, I’ve decided to share a piece of information that I learned along with a corresponding challenge each month. Hopefully this will inspire you to read a new book, listen to a new podcast, or give you an easy icebreaker at our next meeting.
A few months ago I read a book titled High Performance Habits by Brendon Burchard. This book was filled with insight and tactical advice on how to level up your life and career by creating better habits, but there was one chapter that has really stuck with me, and I think would be beneficial to share with you as well.
“We’ve found that high performers can articulate their future self with greater ease than others. Tactically, this means that they tend to have a faster and more thoughtful, confident response when I ask them “If you could describe your ideal self in the future, the person you are trying to become, how would you describe that self?” In reviewing recordings from my interviews, it’s clear that high performers have thought about this more than others……So what makes the difference is that high performers imagine a positive version of themselves in the future, and then they actively engage in trying to be that. They aren’t waiting to demonstrate a characteristic next week or next month. They are living into their dreams now.”
My challenge to you (and Brendon’s tactical advice) is this: Think about your best future self and identify three words that describe that version of you. Then, put those words into the alarms in your phone for a few times each day to remind yourself. My three words are Confident, Ambitious, and Optimistic. I can’t wait to hear what some of yours are!
I also wanted to say thank you to everyone who joined us for our October meeting at Charleston’s. I hope to see you all at our November meeting which will be a joint meeting with Financial Executives International (FEI) to listen to Javier Fernandez, the CEO of OPPD, discussing “The Public Power Model”. As always, if you have any feedback or speaker ideas, feel free to reach out to myself or one of the board members at any time!
Sincerely,
Courtney
