Board Duties

One of the best ways to get involved with your chapter is to volunteer to be on the Board of Directors. Serving on the Board is a great way to meet other chapter members and to improve your leadership, team building, public speaking, and business writing skills in a supportive environment.

President

  • Preside over all Board and membership meetings
  • Execute chapter goals and monitor compliance with chapter budget
  • Offer guidance and expertise to Board and committee members
  • Delegate tasks to Board and committee members as needed
  • Prepare President's message for newsletter
  • Prepare speech for Public Relations Dinner
  • Prepare speech for Board installation ceremony
  • Create summary report at the end of the chapter year

President Elect

  • Attend all Board and membership meetings
  • Review chapter bylaws for compliance with National bylaws
  • Assist chapter President as needed
  • Submit reports to National as needed

Secretary

  • Attend all Board and membership meetings
  • Record minutes of all Board meetings and submit to Board for approval
  • Record minutes of all chapter business meetings and submit to chapter members for approval
  • Submit minutes to National as required
  • Respond to local and National correspondence as needed

Treasurer

  • Attend all Board and membership meetings
  • Prepare annual chapter budget based on input from other Board members
  • Record all payments and disbursements of the chapter
  • Prepare monthly financial report and distribute to Board and chapter members
  • Maintain all financial records and submit to a non-Board member for annual financial review

Director of Communications

The National website offers a variety of materials for members assuming Board positions. Visit the members only area of the National website at afwa.org/login and scroll down to the Leadership Toolkit at the bottom of the page. There you will find suggestions for member recruitment and retention, ideas for programs and speakers, tips to promote chapter events, and ways to use social media. The website is also the source for the chapter's annual forms and reports that are required to be filed with the National office.
