President's Message

Hello, and welcome to the 2018-2019 year of the Accounting & Financial Women’s Alliance (AFWA) Omaha chapter! It is with honor that I serve as your chapter president.

As I write my first president’s message I reflect on how I came to be a member of AFWA. I was introduced to AFWA in 2014 by Christi Olsen. One of the first meetings I attended was in August of 2014. What stood out to me the most at the meeting was how welcoming the members were. I decided to become a member in January of 2015. AFWA has blessed me with many opportunities for both personal and professional growth and has introduced me to new friends from across the country. I’m thankful for AFWA and am honored to spend this next year as chapter president.

Thank you to Annette Devine and Natalya Walls for leading me towards this role. It has been wonderful learning from your leadership over the past two years.

Thank you to the current board of directors who have volunteered their time to serve the chapter. Your time and dedication are truly appreciated.

Our goal for the year is to grow the chapter’s membership. I ask each our members and guests to think back to your first AFWA meeting. Who invited you to your first meeting? What was your first impression of AFWA? Why did you attend a second and third meeting? What lead you to decide to become a member? My hope is that you think back to that time to remind yourself of the excitement you felt when you were a new member. Share your experience with those around you and introduce them to the chapter.

I encourage your feedback and any ideas you may have for meeting topics, locations, speakers and ideas to grow the membership. You can make the most of your membership by volunteering your time to the local board, The Foundation of AFWA or AFWA LEAP. There are many opportunities available to you as a member to grow both personally and professionally.

We have a great year planned for you. Take a look at the meeting schedule and see which meetings you are interested in attending. I also want to remind you to register for the Women Who Count National Conference this October. This year’s event is a road trip away in Kansas City. The National Conference offers an impressive CPE schedule as well as a chance to meet other passionate AFWA members. Many memories are made that you don’t want to miss out on.

I will leave you all with an accounting joke for you to share – How do you know when an accountant is going through a mid-life crisis? She gets a faster calculator!

Thank you!

Ashley Huss
