President's Message

Thank you to the members and guests who joined us for our kickoff event at Soaring Wings! We had a beautiful night and it was great to be able to enjoy some local wine and have great conversations. Even though the last six months have been different and difficult, it was easy to fall back into conversation and laughter. I cannot wait until this becomes the norm again instead of the exception.
Since we just kicked off our season and are working on the details of our programming calendar, I don’t have much AFWA news to share. Therefore, I wanted to take this opportunity to share a few thoughts and encouragement.
I recently read an article that talked about the “wall” that comes six months into a crisis. We are now six months into the pandemic and I feel like we are coming upon that wall. Personally I am tired of the restrictions and ongoing uncertainty. There are days when I feel like things are fine and there are days when I feel like this will never end. The author, Aisha Ahmad, acknowledges that this is normal and assures us that this “wall” will break naturally in 4-6 weeks and that we will regain the initial strength and perseverance that got us through the start of the pandemic. She stresses that right now is the time to focus on our mental and physical health and to continue to give ourselves and others grace as we navigate through the continued uncertainty.
I am trying to apply these concepts daily and I encourage you all to look for ways to take a mental break from the craziness and to engage in activities that are meaningful and important to you. After this is all done, I hope we remember how resourceful we are, that our physical and mental health is important, and that as cliché as it is, it’s okay some days to say the best thing you did was….. survive the chaos.

“You have to look at your career and personal life at the big-picture level: it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Doing that helps me feel OK during the weeks when one part of my life overwhelms the other.”
- Joanna Horsnail (Partner, Mayer Brown LLP)
