At our October meeting we were very happy to present the local non-profit Project Pink’d with a $100 donation on behalf of the AFWA Omaha Chapter & our wonderful members. We got to hear from several individuals about all the wonderful work that they are doing for this non-profit and we thought that we would share some of that information with the rest of our members that were not able to attend the meeting and hear about all the wonderful things first hand.
Project Pink’d was started right here in Omaha by Cynthia Sturgeon, who is also a breast cancer survivor. This organization was created to help provide tools & resources to a growing number of individuals who are or have been diagnosed with breast cancer. They provide all types of support and networking to survivors throughout Nebraska and Western Iowa from the time of their diagnosis to end of life. Just a few of the many wonderful programs that they offer are assistance for survivors who are having a hard time paying their bills, whether that be utility bills, mortgage, groceries, prescriptions, etc.; they offer traditional beauty assistance as well for wigs, scarves, caps, radiation and skin care products, and post-mastectomy bras; they offer counseling sessions and many wellness programs on nutrition and cooking and yoga. They also give out jars of hope to area hospitals to hand out to individuals that are undergoing cancer treatments to help them throughout the process.
A growing number of women are impacted by this disease each year, whether that be themselves or a loved one, and this wonderful organization and resource is available to every single one of them. It was very humbling to hear about all the work that this organization has done and continues to do for the growing population of survivors in our area. If anyone is interested in learning more about this organization or supporting them in any way, feel free to visit their website.
