June 2018 Print

President's Message

It's hard to believe that my year as President will end June 30, 2018. As I reflect back on the year I'm honored to have served as President. AFWA is a fantastic organization providing great networking opportunities, CPE events, social events and continuous learning. I encourage you to explore the opportunities available to you and to consider helping the Omaha Chapter to ensure we stay viable.

During the months of June and July the Omaha Chapter will take a break.

This will allow the 2018-2019 board to transition in place. Be prepared to attend some educational and fun events this coming year. Summer is the time for family vacations, we hope you all enjoy this hot weather and that you will share with us pictures and stories about your vacation(s).

My final thoughts: In the busy-ness of my day, I sometimes forget to stop to thank my family, friends and co-workers for all the good in my life. My blessings are many and my heart is filled with gratefulness for the gift of living, for the ability to love and be loved, for the opportunity to learn and share.

I recently attended a conference where Shawn Achor a happiness researcher, spoke about the science of happiness and how simply strategies promote positive leadership and improved engagement. My take-a-ways were 1) Each morning spend 2 minutes praising or thanking people in your life. 2) Write down 3 things daily you are thankful for and why.

Thank you for the opportunity to be your 2017-2018 President.

Annette Devine

Previous Events

May Event - Annual Public Relations Dinner and CPE Event

We had such a wonderful turnout! Thank you everyone for attending and supporting the AFWA Omaha Chapter.

The CPE sessions ranged from excel tips and tricks, to identity theft, alll the way to leadership in the workplace and emotional intelligence.  All of the presentations were informative and made the afternoon enjoyable!

Our keynote speaker, Lyn Wallin Ziegenbein, J.D. was phenomenal! She provided so much insight and wisdom for all women to succeed and lead.

We are very thankful to those that donated a raffle basket.  The baskets were amazing and the cake pop fundraiser was fun and delicious! The raffle baskets and cake pops raised a total of $965! Half of the funds raised will be donated to Completely Kids in Omaha.

April Event - Self-Defense Social at Tactical 88

What an experience! We learned how to be aware of our surroundings, be cognizant of our intuition when interacting with people, how to protect ourselves by using our voice, and some easier ways to physically protect ourselves.

After our hands on self-defense training we enjoyed appetizers at the restaurant in Tactical 88 and had our meeting which included voting on the proposed bylaw amendments.

February Event - Health and Fitness Tips for Women at Prairie Life Fitness

The professionals at Prairie Life Fitness provided an informational presentation on nutrition and exercise, gave us a tour of the facilities and provided us lunch from the cafe.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Opportunity

Ashley Huss, our 2018-2019 AFWA Omaha Chapter President, has been a Big Sister since 2011. Ashley is reaching out to our members and their employers to see if they would host a lunch and learn at their office for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands to come talk to their employees about the program. Lunch will be provided by Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Ashley hopes the lunch and learn will inspire members and employees to become Bigs. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands would love the opportunity to plan something with your employer. Please email ahuss@infinitycpagroup.com for more information!

Here is a great article about how companies and their employees benefit when they take interest in volunteer opportunities.  Omaha business Ervin & Smith contributed to the article. https://www.shrm.org/resourcesandtools/hr-topics/employee-relations/pages/businesses-and-community-benefit-from-employee-volunteer-projects.aspx
